There is plenty happening at North Steyne these holidays.

Channel 9’s TODAY show visited our Club and did 4 x live crosses during the weather updates. Channel 9 is a sponsor of North Steyne, and chose to feature us given our history and great reputation.

During the morning (which started at an early 5am!) we showcased our boaties, our lifesavers, the A Team and our Nippers. Our messages were around the value in volunteering and the importance of the lifesaving movement, and, of course, we talked about the proud history of our Club. The other key message was SWIM BETWEEN THE FLAGS.

The Boaties were the first to be featured with a live cross at 6.12am. It was an early start indeed, but they were able to launch the boat and did an impressive farewell over the waves and a quick 2kms row out to sea. Great job to Molly and Col who were interviewed.

Our lifesavers were next with Danii Edwards, Deb Foote and Claire Oxlade talking about the importance of being safe in the ocean, particularly around the holidays, and swimming between the flags, sometimes spelled F-L-G-S (inside joke).

The third live cross featured 3 x A-Team members with a combined 160+ years’ experience in lifesaving. Jack Sutherland, Ron Morton and John O’Brien talked about the importance of lifesaving to the community, their great cooking skills and Ron, once again, managed to charm another news anchor.

The final cross starred our Nippers who demonstrated their enthusiasm for the beach, and performed an impressive flag race.

Thanks to all those who participated today, and particularly Dan Hillier who pulled everyone together. It is great to see North Steyne acknowledged for the important work that we do and our contribution to the community.

Go North Steyne!
