November was a huge month for our wonderful competitors and members, with the final rounds of the Fast Fives Carnival and the official start of the Ocean Swim season keeping everyone busy.
We kicked off the month with North Steyne hosting Round 2 of the Fast Fives Carnival — a dynamic water event featuring five rounds across board, surf ski, and swim — held alongside Round 1 of Beach Stormers. It was a fantastic day with over 150 competitors taking part across both events.
These days simply don’t happen without the support of our amazing members. From early-morning set up, ensuring events run smoothly and safely, to packing down afterwards — your contribution is invaluable.
A special shout-out to our youth competitors, who helped set up the beach track under the guidance of Keith Abraham, and to our IRB drivers in training, who set the cans and provided essential water safety. Thank you to Richard Donaldson for coordinating this, and to our Drivers — Chris, Jonboy, Charlie, Rory and Scott — for their support.
We had 13 North Steyne competitors take on the Fast Fives, each going around the cans at least ten times! A special mention to Cassandre and Emma, who competed in their first ever water carnival — an incredible milestone. We are so proud of every single competitor. Pulling on the club cap and stepping onto the start line takes courage, and it was fantastic to see so many black and gold caps out there.
A big thank you to Rex Morris for capturing the day with some incredible photos:

The final round of the Fast Fives was held at Whale Beach — remarkably, the first carnival hosted there in 40 years! We had a fantastic cohort of female competitors put on the black and gold cap (go the girls!) and deliver some exceptional results. It has been so rewarding to see their confidence in the water — and in carnivals — continue to grow.
The conditions were tricky, and events like these really highlight the importance of time in the ocean and reading the surf. Despite this, our athletes excelled:
- Milli Crofton wrapped up the Bennet Fast Fives (2025/2026) Series with an outstanding 2nd place in the U14/U15 Female Board and 4th place in the U14/U15 Female Swim.
- Capucine Dequidt secured 5th overall in Open Women Board, an incredible achievement.
Phenomenal results for the black and gold — well done to all competitors!
Our officials also continue to shine, receiving excellent feedback from both Branch and Carnival Referees. A huge thank you to Stu Crofton, Christine Jones and Gordon Lang for their dedicated officiating throughout the Fast Fives Series. The success of our competitors is only possible with the support of officials — we appreciate you.
Ocean Swim Season
The Ocean Swim season is officially underway, and it’s always fantastic to support our neighbouring clubs. Well done to the crew who took part in the Narrabeen and Collaroy Ocean Swims.
Over the December/January break we’ll look to squeeze in a few extra ocean swims — hopefully another Freshie-and-back run — and for anyone gearing up for the Cole Classic, we’ll organise some additional training as well.
The water temperature is absolutely perfect right now, so jump in whenever you can!

The North Steyne Angels proudly pulled on the club cap at the Freshie Masters, with Erin stepping in as our fabulous team manager for the day. The surf was big, messy and unforgiving, and while we may have been the smallest team on the beach (just one team!), the Angels absolutely dominated in the challenging conditions.
One of the standout highlights of the entire carnival was the Angels winning the Board Relay — beating all other age groups and clubs, including the one just down the sand from us!
This is a massive achievement, and we couldn’t be more proud of Becky and Lou Lou for their determination, courage, and willingness to step right out of their comfort zone (and push through a whole lot of sand… everywhere!).
Go the Angels!

Upcoming Carnivals
There’s plenty to look forward to as we head into the new year. The Palm Beach Masters will be held on 2 January (for competitors 30 years and over, team water events), followed by Branch Champs on the first weekend of February. With club points on the line, let’s get as many black and gold caps on the beach as we can!
Stay Warm on the Beach
The recent carnivals were a strong reminder of just how important it is to have a warm jacket while waiting on the beach — especially when the wind picks up or you’re between races.
To help our members stay warm and comfortable, we’ve ordered Engine Jackets, now available at the club uniform shop. Sizes are limited, so grab one while you can!
