Our North Steyne lifesaving team proudly pulled on the black and gold caps this weekend at the SNB Branch Championships, held at Freshwater SLSC. Across four big days of competition, our athletes took part in Champion Lifesaver, First Aid, and Patrol Competition events and delivered outstanding performances throughout.

Innovation and Milestones in Lifesaving Competition
This year marked a significant milestone for the Champion Lifesaver event, with the theory component held online for the first time. This innovative approach streamlined the process and was very well received by competitors.
We are also thrilled to celebrate a new achievement for North Steyne: our very first Youth Official, Jasmine Greenhalgh. Jasmine has stepped up to complete the official’s course, helping ensure our club can continue to compete strongly in lifesaving events. Officiating is open to all members aged 13 and over who wish to stay involved in Surf Sports without competing in physical events an exciting opportunity for our younger members.

First Aid Teams Deliver Under Pressure
Saturday’s First Aid scenarios were particularly challenging, but our teams rose to the occasion thanks to the dedication, coaching, and mentoring of Kyra, who has spent much of the summer holidays training with the athletes.
Their hard work paid off with outstanding podium results for both the U15 and U19 teams. Our inspiring NS Penguins also put in a brilliant performance, finishing 4th in a very competitive Open division. We’re excited to see what they can achieve at State Championships.

Sunday Action: Physical Events and Patrol Competition
Sunday morning brought perfect conditions as the cans were set for the physical components of the competition. Despite Keith Abraham’s attempts to extend the course, the rangefinder was safely hidden, and racing kicked off with sprints. While the youth competitors thrived, our Opens and Masters were equally pleased to finish injury free!
After sprinting, athletes tackled the swim, board, and tube swim races. While the Champion Lifesaver results were being tallied, the Patrol Competition teams completed their physical events. The Pink Power Rangers lucked out with ideal relay positions, swim, tube swim, and board rescue and they made the most of them.
During presentations, our Champion Lifesaver competitors shone brightly. A highlight of the day was the 50+ Female division, where Deb maintained her undefeated streak despite tough competition trying hard to dethrone her.
The Patrol Competition scenario that followed tested teams across multiple first aid and rescue situations, and our athletes met the challenge with skill and composure.

Thank You to Our Volunteers
As always, these events would not be possible without the incredible dedication of our Officials, support crew, and patients. Your time and expertise allow our athletes to compete thank you.
A special thanks to Scott Turner and Charlie Colwell, who ensured we met our Water Safety requirements, including the provision of the IRB throughout Sunday’s events.

Next Stop: State Championships
With just two weeks until the State Championships at Swansea Belmont, the team is gearing up for another big weekend. A top two finish will secure athletes a coveted place at Nationals on the Gold Coast in March.
The Baton is now handed over to the Masters and Nippers for their events this coming weekend at Queenscliff.
