It takes a lot to become a Life Member of North Steyne – over 15 years of service, contribution to all areas of the Club, dedication to teamwork, and just being an all-around great person. And our newest life member, Shannon Job, meets all those criteria and more.

Shannon started his surf lifesaving journey as a Nipper at North Curl Curl SLSC. Shannon obtained his Bronze Medallion through the Shore School Program at Long Reef SLSC in 2002 where he patrolled from 2002 to 2005. Shannon was encouraged to join North Steyne by Adam Traugott after completing high school, and in January 2006 he joined our Club.

Shannon has completed 778 hours of patrol as an active member gaining multiple higher awards including the Gold Medallion, Silver Medallion Advanced Emergency Care,  Silver Medallion Advanced First Aid, Silver Medallion Aquatic Rescue,  Silver Medallion Beach Management, Silver Medallion IRB Driver, Silver Medallion Radio Controller and Advanced Resuscitation Techniques to assist.

His role as Club Captain however, is perhaps his most significant contribution to North Steyne’s lifesaving legacy. Shannon stepped up as the Assistant Club Captain in the 2006/7 season and again as Club Captain from 2008/9 to 2010/11 and capably led the patrolling membership of North Steyne. During this period, North Steyne consistently placed top 3 in the rankings for the patrol assessment competition every year (3rd in 2008/9, 2nd in 2009/10 and 2nd in 2010/11), recognising North Steyne’s excellent patrolling standard.

Shannon has also made a major contribution to the development of lifesaving competition at North Steyne. Shannon was instrumental in training Champion Lifesaver and First Aid competitors which has led to considerable competition success for North Steyne and other SNB teams.

As a competitor himself, he has represented North Steyne SLSC to the highest standard, winning medals, including gold, at Branch, State and Australian Championships in Champion Lifesaver, First Aid and Champion Patrol Competition. At Club level, he has been awarded the Open Competitor of the Year numerous times, along with the Founder’s Cup, which recognises the most outstanding competitor in swimming and lifesaving.

Shannon has also held multiple positions on the North Steyne Board. These include Assistant Club Captain (2007/8), Club Captain (2008/9 – 2010/11), Executive Officer (2011/12 and 2012/13), Assistant Secretary (2015/16 – 2018/19), Treasurer (2021/22 and 2022/23). He has also chaired the Life Memberships and Honors Panel since the 2015/16 season.

Additionally, Shannon has represented the Club admirably at the Branch taking on several positions throughout the years. He was the Branch Director of Education (2012-2014) and the Branch Deputy President (2015-2019). In 2014, he was chosen to represent SLS and chaperoned Prince William and Duchess Catherine Middleton in their visit to Manly Beach.

Shannon was awarded Long Service but has continued to patrol and support North Steyne patrols and mentor new patrol captains. In 2022, Shannon was awarded a 20-year National Patrol Service award, demonstrating a long term commitment to patrolling, which included 17 years at North Steyne.

Shannon continues to contribute to our Club in many ways, including being our current Treasurer. We couldn’t be prouder to have a member like Shannon and we congratulate him on being our newest Life Member!
